What is the OET exam?

The OET is an international English proficiency test that assesses the medical terminology language communication skills of healthcare professionals ‘Physicians and/or medical school students’. OET medicine is designed specifically for physicians: ECFMG has chosen this test to determine if a candidate meets the minimum English skills required to practice medicine in the USA.
The test is divided into four parts: listening, writing, reading and speaking.

1. OET: Listening test

Exam duration is 50 minutes.
In this section, the exam assesses your ability to understand spoken language. It is divided into three parts: A, B and C. You will listen to consultations (part A), monologues (i.e. one person speaking) and/or dialogues (i.e. 2 persons speaking) (part B) between doctors and patients. and C). In each encounter, you will have to fill in the answers according to the information in the listening exercise.

2. OET: Writing test

Exam duration is 45 minutes.
In this section, you will be given a case and a note about the case. Along with this, a task will be given and you will be given five minutes to read this note. (You will not be allowed to use a pen or pencil during these five minutes). After your Reading Time is over, you will be asked to write a letter according to the assigned task, and you will be given 40 minutes for this. While starting the writing process, the following measures will be taken into account and evaluated; Purpose, content, brevity and clarity, genre and style, organization and order, and language.

3. OET: Reading exam

Exam duration is 60 minutes. In this section, you will be given texts that talk about different health-related topics and you will answer questions according to these texts. The reading is divided into three parts, A, B, and C. Part A is done alone and is 15 minutes. While parts B and C are taken together, you are given 45 minutes to complete both. (This is why we recommend that you use the time carefully.) Part B consists of six short texts of approximately 100-150 words from a healthcare workplace where you will receive a three-choice multiple-choice question for each text. Part C consists of two long texts of up to 800 words, with each text covering a specific topic and divided into paragraphs. In Part C you will receive eight multiple choice questions with four choices. The good thing about Part C questions is that they guide you where to look in the text (i.e. by stating which paragraph in the text the question is about).

4. OET: Speaking Test

Exam duration is 20 minutes.
In each speaking test, your identity and area of expertise are checked by the examiner, and there is a short warm-up conversation about your area of expertise. The roles to be played are then introduced and you are given three minutes to prepare. Each of the role-playing tasks takes about five minutes.
For each role you will play, you will get information from the cards that you will have beforehand. The card gives you information about what you need to do, you can take notes on the card if you wish.
